SPOTLIGHT ON: BROMLEY FAN - GEORGIE WEAVER

Before every home game, the OAFC Her Game Too team interview a visiting female fan, player or employee.

Today, for our last game of the season, we caught up with Georgie, a Bromley fan!

Name - Georgie Weaver

Team - Bromley FC

Can you tell us something special about your hometown that we may not know?

The name Bromley originates from Anglo-Saxon, meaning ‘the place where the broom grows’, which I always think sounds quite special.

How far have you travelled to watch your team?

The furthest I have travelled is to Blyth in the North East which is just over 300 miles away, and also Truro down in Cornwall a few seasons ago! This season I haven’t been to as many away games as I sometimes would have done, but will have done 2500 miles in round trips this season (before heading to Boundary Park!)

What got you in to football?

My dad used to play for Margate FC, and when Bromley were playing them in the league around 18 years ago, we all went along to Hayes Lane, and it all went from there! We never looked back.

Favourite memory as a fan?

Either winning the FA Trophy last year against Wrexham, or getting promoted into the National League in 2015. Both really special days that we will all remember forever!

Predictions for this season for your team?

We are now confirmed in the playoffs, and I won’t even try and predict what will happen in them, they are such a lottery!

Player for us to look out for?

Michael Cheek - a prolific goalscorer in the National League, and always causing problems for opposition teams.

Predictions for todays game?

I am going for an exciting 2-2 draw today.

What made you want to be an ambassador?

I had followed the Her Game Too campaign from the start and thought it was exactly what was needed to ensure women and girls feel comfortable when attending games. I could see the amazing work other ambassadors were doing, and because Bromley already did amazing work with women and girls in football, I knew it was something I wanted to partner up with and get involved.

Proudest moment as HGT ambassador at Bromley?

Seeing the men and women’s first teams wearing the HGT warm up shirts for out International Women’s Day fixture last month was special, and it showed such solidarity with the campaign and the message. Also being part of the lap of appreciation with other women and girls who are involved in the club, as it was so nice to see how many females play football at Bromley.

Things you would like to see the club do next?

I would love for us to continue to grow our female fanbase, and get more females to come to away games!

What would you say to any women and girls who are thinking about getting into football playing/fan?

Just give it a go! In terms of watching football, find a local team and contact other women/girls who go and watch, they will be so welcoming! I started playing for the Bromley Belles last year, our recreational women’s football team - I have met amazing people and love every second. I really recommend women and girls of all ages trying out football if they are even slightly considering it!
